NaniBlock, our chopping block made of end-grain oak

A handcrafted, unique piece.

My family now has one of these fantastic NaniBlocks in every household. It's usually on the kitchen counter. You can chop all sorts of things on it: meat, vegetables, bread, cake – you name it, the NaniBlock can handle it. Another bonus: knives and other chopping utensils leave barely visible cuts.

Chopping blocks are made from end-grain wood all over the world. In Austria, they call it Hirnholz (end-grain wood). This is almost the opposite of what makes them special, because the blocks are particularly hard and virtually indestructible.

What truly sets my chopping block apart from most others is the craftsmanship. Many chopping blocks are created more or less by chance. The individual pieces are simply thrown together haphazardly. Our carpenters, however, meticulously examine each block to ensure that patterns emerge from the natural grain of the wood. This results in beautiful ornaments.

Rubber feet for a perfect grip

The chopping block also has four rubber feet on the underside. This prevents the block from slipping while chopping and keeps it exactly where you want it.

Design & Manufacturing

Our chopping block was designed by Reana Hostettler-Durrer from Baden and is handcrafted with great care by a friendly carpenter.

Wood origin

We use wood from the region within a 50 km radius of Lake Constance. All our wood types come from sustainable forestry.

Care instructions for wooden products

This is how your wooden product stays beautiful for a long time:

  1. Water is taboo – water is, next to fire, the biggest enemy of wood. Please always wash by hand, dry immediately and never put in the dishwasher.
  2. Oils for protection – Food-grade oils such as linseed oil, sunflower oil, rapeseed oil, etc. are easy to apply. They offer protection but need a few days to fully harden, so oil them and let them sit for a while.
  3. Constant humidity – Make sure the humidity remains constant, this will help the wood maintain its shape and stability.
  4. Even exposure to light – Expose the wood to sun and light evenly to avoid unwanted color differences.
  5. Wood wax for shine – A little wood wax makes the wood shine, but offers no protection against water.
  6. Avoid extreme temperature changes – Be careful not to expose the wood to extreme temperature changes to avoid cracking and warping.

With these tips, you can enjoy your wooden product for a long time. Have fun with it!
